Well, this is going to be printed as a book for a show, but I think it works just fine as a sequence/comic.
I had to make a piece about, well, basically, monsters under the bed. I thought for a really long time and did my usual process - research, brainstorms, come up with new stuff… but I ended up thinking about my apartment last year.
I lived alone last year, no roommates, first time completely alone. It didn’t end well. I got really depressed for the first time in my life, really paranoid and scared and hated myself. It was no good. I managed to keep up with school but dishes, laundry, things… piled up.
At the same time, I heard a lot of crazy stuff in my apartment, and saw stuff, too. Maybe it was my brain playing tricks on me. Maybe it was a house-wight. It would have been nice to have a friendly domovoi.
Anyway, I wanted to make this and share it with others just to say… don’t let the monsters under the bed get to you. Talk to people if you’re feeling depressed. Swallow your weird toxic pride and paranoia and let your parents (who love you) or the friendly domovoi of your house fold your clothes, and help you get back to normal.
In which my friend makes really damn cool comics about monsters and weird stuff.
huh, this post has been making the rounds again. I’m glad so many people liked it - it was in a show that has already come and gone, and the books were delivered back to me, but it seems like you guys like it much more than the galley crowds (which I should have expected)
Send a number to my ask box along with a character of your choice, and I’ll draw up the ensuing ensemble! (If the character chosen wouldn’t wear the option given… go ahead and sub in something else!)
DRAW YOUR CHARACTER WEARING…

- Work uniform

YES AAAAH ALIEN CLOTHES TIME, HIT ME UP
There was a really cool painting in my Renaissance class today that had both a pun in Italian and badass deer-unicorns. I had to draw the deer unicorns!!
The weird things that keicai and I talk about.
(I swear I saw Bane driving a little Scion and wearing sensible glasses up at College at 106th in Carmel, I swear)
Do you have any advice for people who want to worldbuild and make a species, how to go about it? Especially people who are perfectionists and want all of their own work to be perfectly "believable"?
I considered not answering this and just deleting, because
A) the journey is the destination, dear anon
B) why are you asking /me/ and not summoning the ghost of JRR Tolkien
C) why are you asking anonymously, it’s damned hard to respond to this without knowing where you’re coming from
But I’m the child of two professors and I have the teaching gene in me, so:
YOU NEED TO DO RESEARCH. You need to do research, and then you need to get in touch with your imagination and inner child.
Research does not always mean going to the library and studying all the books. It means being mindful in your life, noticing new things, odd things, things you like, and then going back and finding out more. I think this is integral to being a creator, artist, or just a well rounded human being. You must pay attention to the world, and new experiences, and even everyday things that seem very ordinary to you.
The important part comes next by making connections. You can research and study and take notes and discover things but it will never come to fruition as a new product, a fiction rather than nonfiction, if you don’t make connections. MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THINGS. That is where scientific discoveries are made. That is where artistic discoveries are made. That is where life discoveries are made. Unless you are able to loosen up and start making these connections between different elements of life that you have discovered, you are never going to be able to create something new.
That said, nothing is ever new. This is the same world as the one humans lived in thousands of years ago. The stories are still the same. The earth is still the same. The only way people become creators instead of consumers is by making those ‘new’ connections and being able to present the world in a new light, filtered through their own unique experience as a living human being.
Nothing is ever perfect. But believability is a fair goal! I’m really in to verisimilitude - making things seem like they’re real. I think that will come with the research aspect. The more you learn about the world, the more you’ll get intuitive insight about the patterns of reality and believability. Use logic. Use common sense. Use Occam’s razor. Be relentlessly intelligent in pursuing ideas, don’t just accept things at face value.
Do not get hung up on perfection. It doesn’t exist. You have a limited time here on earth to create. Start making things. ‘Perfection’ makes things sterile and boring. Do not be sterile and boring with your creations.
Ooh, what about Rikk and 11 or Taddeo and 10?
Taddeo+10 is here,
Rikk is not an animal person. But all Huri are supposed to be kind to animals, and Ka’ah have Ka’ah-dogs around all the time.
You as a Huri for faces and Illa for doing something she doesn't normally do. :)
Oh man, my Huri alter-ego has a whole other alternate universe life. Good stuff.
Illa is just not… . . not an athletic person. She’s got a body type to be a complete Amazon among Huri but she’s just not into physical stuff. Words are her thing. She’s also very, very sold on nonviolence, so even things like martial arts would be weird for her.
Doesnt stop me from putting her in awesome workout clothes, aw yeah
